How to Choose the Right Live Wedding Painter for Your Budget
How to Choose the Right Live Wedding Painter for Your Budget
Are you on a budget but you want to create a memory that will last forever? Here’s what to expect and how to book the best live wedding painter for you.
Review their galleries
When looking for your live wedding painter, look through their portfolio to make sure that their work matches the style you like. Are you looking for something more naturalistic? With faces or without? Impressionistic? Every single wedding painter is different, so once you find that artist you like then it’s time to reach out to see if you can set up a time to chat with them about your special day. It’s even better if your wedding painter has packages listed on their website, so that you can see for yourself what their prices are and if you would like to include them in your budget for your special day.
Ask about timeline
Are you getting married on short notice? Are you planning your wedding far in advance? Is your wedding painter available on the day? These are all good things to ask about and discuss with your live wedding painter so that you both can be on the same page with timeline. Most live wedding painters should be able to finish the painting on the day if the painting is just of the two of you, so if you want the painting that night this would be a good thing to ask about before you book with them.
Understand revision process
Most of the time, if the live painter is doing the full painting on the day it would be hard to make time for any revisions. That being said, there is always follow-up studio time! If there is anything small that the couple might want to be adjusted, that can happen in the artist’s studio after the wedding day. It might take a little bit extra time, but those adjustments can be made to fit your liking so that you can treasure the painting and the memory of the day in your home for years to come!
Clarify contract details
If you’re hiring a live wedding painter, you should always sign a contract. In this contract, it will outline the price of everything: the painting itself, the timeline, any additional add-ons, what’s included, etc. Make sure to read it thoroughly so that you and the artist are on the same page with what’s expected and everything can go smoothly on your wedding day!

How much does a live wedding painter cost in 2026?
There are various factors that affect the price of a wedding painter, but the biggest one is experience. People who have worked as a fine artist for years, even if they are new to live wedding painting, are naturally going to be priced higher for their work. Why is this? You’re paying for their expertise and quality. Their experience with painting and materials will guarantee a result that might not be as dependable when looking to book someone who is just starting in their art career for the first time.
Below I included some base numbers for live wedding painter cost for a base price with no add-ons:
Entry level: $1,500–$2,500
Mid-range: $2,500–$4,500
Luxury / established artists: $5,000–$10,000+
If you’re a budget bride looking for a beautiful add-on for you and your guests to enjoy, I would highly recommend someone who has experience and a base price of around $2,800-$3,000. Of course, look through their portfolio first to make sure you love their work and style. But once done, those are the kinds of artists you will want to work with.
What affects the cost of a live wedding painting?
Canvas Size
The bigger the canvas, the more paint and time that goes into making the painting incredible. Not to mention, the cost of the canvas itself for the artist increases in price! So that’s why it’s great to be able to choose what level of painting you’d like that are featured in artist’s packages.
Artist Experience
An artist’s experience truly affects the price of the painting you’ll get. When I go to a hairdresser, there’s a reason I pay $120+ for a hairstylist instead of $20 at the local place where I might get a haircut with someone I don’t know or might just be starting out! Just like with a haircut, a painting lasts forever, and that’s why paying for quality art is incredibly important when hiring your artist.
Travel & Destination Weddings
Once you find your artist, you all get to travel together! I know for one, traveling for weddings is one of my greatest joys. If you have a destination wedding, it’s important to note that the travel costs for the artist will be included in the rate. That is because the services are still the same rendered, just at a more stunning location! That being said, I know that I cover any travel up to 100 miles, so if you’re working with a live wedding artist they should at least have a certain range factored in so you don’t have to pay a fee for a local artist.
Custom Add-Ons (pets, deceased loved ones, venue details)
This is a fun one! It’s always the best to add on pets or loved ones to a couple’s wedding, especially if those family members weren’t able to attend the special day. I always like to add on these touches in the studio, and since live artists are often working from photos for these references, it can take more time. But it’s always so so worth it.
What’s Included in a Live Wedding Painting Package?
Most live wedding painter packages include the same things, with framing being an additional add-on:
4–6 hours of live painting coverage
Studio refinement after the wedding
Sealing & varnishing
Shipping or hand delivery
Live wedding painters should never charge you for studio time unless there are additional add-ons.
Live Wedding Painter vs Photographer – Do You Need Both?
Short answer — yes you do!
Photography and paintings are so different, but they compliment each other. If you have a photographer at your wedding, they’re not there to entertain guests. Their goal is to blend into the surroundings and capture your day as it happened. However, a live wedding painter captures the day as it feels.
A live wedding painter provides entertainment for the guests, so that they get to enjoy the process of watching a work of art get made right before their eyes. Not to mention, it makes for a great reveal moment for the couple to get excited for when they get to see the live painting during the reception and after they’ve taken pictures after the ceremony with the photographer! We’re living in a digital age, and real paintings that you can take home with you at the end of the night are now more treasured than ever.

FAQs About Live Wedding Painting Costs
FAQs About Live Wedding Painting Costs
We live in an era where every time we go out to get a coffee, we’re faced with a dilemma when that little screen is turned towards us and there are percentage amounts added onto a bill when all you wanted was a quick coffee before you go sit in an office for approximately 8 hours of your day. To tip, or not to tip? So many hidden fees, taxes, etc. So hopefully, this will help clear up any confusion you might have regarding live wedding painting costs.
Do you tip a live wedding painter?
This is the wonderful news — you don’t. As a live wedding painter myself, we are setting our own prices so that you don’t have to feel that added pressure of giving a tip at the end of the best day of your lives.
While a tip is always appreciated, it is never something that I expect. All of the fees should be outlined and agreed upon in the contract before hand, and then you get a phenomenal painting at the end of it!
Do live painters finish the painting at the wedding?
Most of the time, yes! Especially if it’s just a couple being painted, that is something that can be done on the day of your wedding so that you can take it home at the end of the night. That being said, I always strive for near perfection in my paintings and want to make sure I’m giving my couples the best quality product I can. So if you choose a larger canvas, have additional recognizable guests included in the painting, or want to add in people/pets who weren’t there, then you can expect the artist to finish the painting in their studio to be shipped to you once it’s done.
Can live wedding painters include family members who couldn’t attend?
Yes absolutely! In fact, that’s one of the best things about live wedding painting. You can adjust the painting to how the day felt, or who you would have wanted to be there alongside you. All that’s needed for the live portrait artist is a couple high resolution images of the person/pet and some studio time to add them into your special day.
